Gostyń, some experience

down in Poland for the week. apart from work, I'm quite free in the evenings. tot I should write something.. In a way making up to my sluggish posts lately. . This is my last assignment in *GT.. sort of.. as I still have two other projects to conclude and handover before I finish next Tuesday.. sigh.. now, was that being emotional or a sigh of relieve? while I doubt it’s the first, I'm pretty sure its not the later. as I mentioned in my previous post, the last 10 months has been terrific. Can't think of a better place to have started my career in a stranger's land, adapting to the different ambience and ethnicity. won't change a thing about my initial days, given the option to start all over again..

Gostyń, a small town about an hour or so from the Poznan city is where my client is. today's my last evening here. hv so much to do when I get back before heading off for my hols next wed. I'm all alone in a town that has nothing to offer after 6. Yet, i'm not all too keen in getting back to London. its so peaceful and laidback here. am lovin it. haven't done this sort of this in a while. sit outside the hotel, enjoy the peace over a book and latte till the sun goes down, is what i've been doing pretty much every evening since i got here.. cld be a lot to do with how hectic the last few weeks have been. glad for the time alone.

Last week especially, had been quite eventful, not in the most pleasant way mind you. I've been working late finishing off stuff while sorting out bits and pieces from previous engagements. its strange how when I'm free, I'm so free that I'll wishing more than ever someone would call me out or long to pick up the phone and make plans. and when I have plans, everything else will choose to appear at the exact time. so have been the last few weeks in my diary, overwhelmed with 'social commitments', to put it in a more sophisticated way.:) somehow, I managed to shrink the never ending list of my 'to dos' by friday and left the prep work for this trip to Saturday. flight was Sunday mng at 8. left the laptop in the office to come in the next day and work more productively frm office. dinner was with the Malaysian guys in some place in holborn. despite my strong determination to make it a short one, got home way past midnight. well, at least I managed to stay perfectly sober. no way I cld afford a hangover.

so saturday, I had planned to meet E in the office. got a text from him around 10-ish asking me not to bother since there is a major power but in the office and no one is allowed in. Not even to go up and get the laptop or what-so-ever for the blurdy health and safety reasons. and apparently no way its gonna be fixed on that day. The security asked E to leave his number so they can contact him when its sorted. That’s it, "I'm f*cked!" big time! laptop in the office and 8 am flight next mng? isn't it all fun? well, worst case scenario, I'll hv to change my flight to Monday and inform the client. its not something I fancy with the time constraint. so, around 12-ish I went to the office, hoping to get some sympathy or play some charm on the security guard and to at least go up and grab my laptop out. things were the same when i got there. they were trying to get H&S clearance for us to get stuff out at least. he said i cld wait if i wanted to. there were a few others were in the lobby too. waited for abt 45 mins and lucky us, we cld to use the stairs, accompanied by one of the security to go and get the things. thank God my office was on the 5th floor. even then I was panting away by the time I got up. grabbed my laptop and files and headed back home.. spent the rest of the day working. It was 1 by the time I finished packing and got ready for bed. need to be up by half 4. called for a taxi at half 5.. then called my mum to ask her to give a wake up call at 445 london time.. and guess what, as usual, she got the time wrong. my dad called. not her mistake exactly, I miscalculated myself. and thanks to my dad, he had to ring the house phone instead of my mobile. at freaking 245 in the morning! I'm not sure if Jo woke up but I was startled.. he rang again at 445 and then at 5 to make sure I was up.

the cab arrived on time. but we had trouble locating the station entrance. The entrance to Kentish Town Rail station is normally thru the underground. but because of the wee hour and underground station doesn’t open till 7 on Sundays, we had to go thru a strange path at the back. taxi driver didn't have a clue. I know how to walk there, but he refused to drop me saying no way he is leaving me there on my own at 6 in the morning! so, he parked his car and walked me to the platform thru a dodgy looking path surrounded by some construction workers. see?! he had his point. isn’t he sweet? he was, very sweet indeed. the train was just in time. halfway thru the journey, my phone rang. tot my dad was calling to make sure I didn’t go right back into bed. but it was the cab driver (gave the number to the cab company ma), called to check if I got onto the train alright…aaawwwwww….

got to the airport, checked in, had bfast, got some cash and boarded. the flight was okie but the take off was a bit scary. I've never heard such noises coming out from an air-plane. the usual me, started imagining things like, some parts got loosen in the plane and what would happen if they fall off halfway? trust me to make the worst of teh bad. grinning

The Poznan airport, for a small city of a not so there yet eastern-European country, wasn't all that bad. had a bit of trouble in the immegration as the guy demanded a visa when i don quite need one but got that clarified with his office later. all sorted. I went to the baggage carousal. something told me my baggage is not gonna be there. (the paranoya frm my athens trip i guess) plus I'm a strong believer of "If things go bad, they can get worst!" If I loose my baggage now, God only know what I'd do. No, actually, I've thought about that when checking in itself. I'll go shop for some new cloths in the big new shopping mall my colleague W mentioned and charge it all back to the firm/insurance/client whichever (smart eh?) unfortunately, I wasn't all that lucky! my baggage was there after all.

got to the hotel around 12-ish, checked in and went out for a walk. met a German gal while looking for directions and she happens to be in Poznan for a day on a stop over. we spend the rest of the day together. a pleasant Sunday afternoon. Hot and sunny. did a bit of shopping and got back to the hotel around 9. the client was picking me up at 8 the next mng to go Gostyń.

8 on the dot, I was picked up by a barely English speaking but very warm and friendly looking ukrainian client. A Michael Schumacher wannabe on a moving chimney! my definition of him. Not that W did not warn me, his driving aptitude was way beyond my imagination. we were mostly driving on a 2 lane road with lost of heavy vehicle. its the short cut according to him. every time I see a lorry approaching in the front or he attempts over-taking one in the tiniest space, my heart took a 360 degree somersault .. to be keeping a speed of 110m/h on a road that's seen a better days and has a speed limit of 70m/h, u either need to have the skills or u have to be absolutely mad. I cant decide in which category he was. somewhere in between the two. it wasn't just him. even the other drivers on the road were equally wacky. Sometimes there were two to three cars passing some other at the same time. Wonder whats Poland's statistic on road accidents. well, okie, I don't want to know. he'll be driving me back to the airport tom.

The scenery on the way though, somewhat compensated the whole ride. Very beautiful with mostly green fields. The houses look quite expensive thou. giving u the impression of rich country. It's not at all shabby looking country, like I expected given my understanding of how most Eastern-European countries are in poor condition. after a terrific and hour and half ride, we finally arrived at the factory.

okie.. will stop here for now.. off to bed.. going to be a long day tom. need to wrap up the stuff here and head back to London at half 4.. will cont tom.. tata
