all iz well afterall

I am a big time hindi movie fan. (yes, i do cry all thesometimes) while there has been quite a few moview out lately, there are two pariticularly amazing ones i'd like to share with you. Two mindblowing work by the two legendary Khans of Bollywood. Both of which could easily sit high on the best movies ever made list. One of which was such a hit that it made Avatar shy away in India. I've been waiting for the buzz to be over. by now most of you would have watched it on the big screen or some waiting for the dvd, in which case you may want to stop reading right here. warning on spoilers ahaed.

So first, 3 Idiots. It is Amir Khan the legend. with just that you would have rised your expectations. so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel here.. that guys is a genious. along with Sharman Joshi and Madhavan they had incredible chemistry. This is the second time they are teaming after Rang De Basanthi. Should do more guys. Even then, while Sharman and Madhavan were great, it’s Amir who was the icing on the cake. His ability to breathe, look and perform like a 25 year old was simple amazing! Kareena Kapoor was once again tolerable. I’ve never been her big fan but she was good here and has been recently.

The story itself is about 3 engineering students and their life during college days. the memories were told in flashback as they go looking for one of them, Amir or Rancho, after a few years. Amir carries the role of a free thinking, super intelligent gu who touches their life and changes it. They somehow managed to loose touch (he left without saying anything actually) but never forgotten him..

I loved almost every bit of the movie and laughed my lungs out for the whole time. So did everyone else in the cinema actually. here are some of my fav scenes in the movie.. I’m not elaborating so those who’ve not watched won’t curse me:
the ragging scene in the beginning; people getting electrocuted while pissing (LoL); Amir and Kareena driving Sharman Joshi’s sick father on their bike to the hospital; The chamatkar - balatkaar bit; The part where the baby boy is born; almost all scenes of Amir’s clash with the professor; and finally the climax! the Phusukh Wangdu moment couldn’t have been better! And then there is the punch line, ‘All iz well’.. its like everything does go well when he says it. You can feel it when you watch the movie.

On the content itself, I liked the message on moving from that typical mark or status focus mindset. i've spoken about this to many people. Even here in Malaysia where parents or even the students are biased towards seeing only Doctors or Engineers as good professions. Even if it was just a movie, was great to see people choosing professions like photography or journalism over typical medicine, engineering or Law.. we may have a long way to go for our kids to be free to pursue what they are passionate about, but its through messages like this they can learn that. success is not about landing in a certain good profession, but its about how successful you are in whichever profession you choose. its true that reality won’t be like Phusukh Wangdu for everyone, but they deserves an opportunity to explore the possibility at least right? And then there is the students committing suicide because of academic pressure is a reality in schools as well as colleges. Even here in Malaysia, we see and hear in the newspapers after the state exam result. So, if just one parent or teacher stops pressurising the kid after seeing the movie, the movie is considered a success. That said, there are some part in the movie I didn’t quite agree too. Like the blatant disrespect to the professor. (I know we see that in the movies all the time, but still) the portrayal of a bad education system in India. Perhaps it was just in that college, in which case it is more acceptable.

Ok, moving on to the music. wasn’t that great without the visual for me. Especially compared to Amir’s other films by AR Rahman. But when you see on screen, you will fall in love with them.. I especially liked the “Give me some Sunshine” score.. stayed with me for a while after the movie.. Overall, 3 Idiots is a great entertainer. A complete masala movie with jokes that will make you laugh till your jaw hurts and a twist of drama that will touch your heart and make you believe that ‘all iz well’ afterall. So, if you’ve not watched it. please do!
