Its been a while. Works been rather hectic (no, not complaining).. been travelling a bit too. (excuse.. excuse…)
the thing is, I haven’t got broadband connection at home (yet).. so, my only source to the cyber-world at the moment is office. Given that I'm not in office half the time doesn’t make things any better.. ok. yup, dial-up's an option. but seriously, no thank you. Waiting 10 seconds for a damn page to come up can sometime be more annoying than hearing your flight announced delayed 2 hours.
Couple of days ago, I had no choice but to dial up from home to do an online transfer. it bloody took me half an hour just to do a transfer.. then I sat there, wondering how some few years ago, when dial-up was almost the only option to internet, I don remember whining this much. well, i did complain a bit when the line in the cybercafé goes down when I'm just about to send the mail i spent 1/2 hour typing..
Recalling the good old days back in UTM (Technology University of Malaysia where I spend 4 glorious, fun filled remarkable years in the name of undergrad studies). The only source for internet then was the faculty lab or the cybercafés. Unlike now, where most varsities come with broadband connections or wi-fi everywhere. Back then, we had to queue to use the lab computer (bare in mind that not all of hem came with internet connection.) and when you eventually get one, the line will be down or it'll take ages just to get the web mail up.. I still don’t quite remember questioning the speed. who cared?
That wasn’t the case when I did my postgrad studies in uni of Southampton about 2 years ago. The rooms in the halls of residence came with broadband connection. The moment I wake up, first thing to do (yes, before even brushing my teeth) is to switch on the computer and get online (or most of the times, I don even bother shutting it down the night before and my MSN status will be set away all night).. When I got back to Malaysia after the one year, I had to (yes, had to) get broadband connection at home. Dialling up every time I wanted to go online (which was most of the time) drove me nuts. Dad asked what's the point if I'm not going to be home most of the time. waste of money. he was happy to dial in (of course he does. all he needed it was to check the market or download mails when he is on leave).. but now, having used to the 1 gb broadband connection, even he dreads going back to dial-up "what is dial-up?" LoLz... so, this is it, the evolution of time...
