it's cost me one whole week of dilemma. I have trouble deciding as both offers have its pros and cons. ok, i'm not exactly complaining. its great to feel wanted, for once. hah. but it is a bit more complicated than i'd imagined.
Got the first offer about 2 weeks ago. the job wasn't precisely what i had in mind, but seemed a bit different and perhaps more challenging. after considering all the rest, i decided to take it up. I just had to wait for the formal offer with the package since it has to cm frm the states... And then last week, i got a call from another firm for a position, i had exactly in mind. I was in spore when they called asking if i cld attend an interview in spore. duh. talk about coincidence. so, i thought, what the hack. i'll give it a go. would i have gone for the interview if i was in sban at the time? i dunno. maybe not. So, on Tuesday i had my first interview with the dept head and it went very well. I was quite taken with what they had to offer. I was then invited for a second interview, a tele-call wth the dept VP on Friday. and on Monday, they made an offer. it all happen so quickly, i dunno what to say. and that took me to a crossroad, where i have to make my choice, when I dun know for certain what lies ahead for both the options.
except for the job scope, they are both of very similar circumstances. the first offer sounded a bit different. but its also an evolving role, whereby the exact job scope cant be put on paper. so, there are possibilities to ending up as a jack of all trait. but it could always be otherwise. interesting, challenging with a variety. i've spent the last couple of days outlining the pros & cons for both offers. I'm tried not to use money as a deciding factor. not the main one at least. Money is important. surely. i cant afford to work for charity, just yet. but job satisfaction and the work life balance weighs more. so, here are the few pointers i considered, to my priority;
Job scope
- career path / opportunities for growth
- Location
- working culture/ perception on work life balance
- travel % & duration away at one time
- Flexibility to work from home when no travelling
- Pay/ Bonus or other perks
- Other benefits - EPF contribution, medical, annual leaves, travel & other allowances
- Travel time compensation/ Overtime
- Share options
i'll skip the whole analysis to save time. to summarize, the second offer seemed more realistic and practical. so, as at now, i'm quite sure to pursue the second offer. i'll inform them on Monday. Guess its not long before I bid farewell to this temporary freedom. sigh.
